Froogle
January 10, 2003 -- updated February 1, 2004
Froogle is the
next great product of the Google team... or at least it might be. Google
has realized that consumers have trouble finding websites that actually
sell the product they're looking for. For example, I did a search in
Google on "Doc Martens" to see where I could buy Doc Martens shoes. From
the first page of results...
- 3 didn't even sell shoes
- 1 had the shoes, but no prices
- 4 had prices, but not in dollars
- Only 2 sold shoes in dollars
All the sites required some navigating to find prices.
I then did the same search in Froogle.
I got a page full of prices, pictures, and links to the web-pages that
feature each item. The Google team hopes that
Froogle's results might be more
useful than Google's standard search engine results.
My recommendation when using Froogle is to make your search as specific as
possible. You can also limit the results to a certain price range.
Only time will tell whether Froogle
will actually be as useful as hoped. There aren't many venders
participating right now, and the Google team is still massaging their
method of returning results relevant to your search. However, consider it
one more tool in your shopping arsenal.
